Thom Newman and Assemblyman Greg Ball
MEMBERS ANNUAL GAME DINNER FEBRUARY 2008
The
annual game dinner was a great success with everything from elk meatloaf to
squirrel and venison dishes as well as lasagna and chicken--something for
everyone. Preceded as always by Pat's delicious pastries to go with wine and
beer beforehand and of course all those goodies afterward: cheese cake,
devil's food cake, pies and pastries--you name it.
Then came the awards: the first one a surprise to our web mistress, Sally
Beers honored for her work on the club web site. This was followed by
the sports awards: to Randy for Biggest large mouth bass and Carlo for
Biggest small mouth bass. Don won the Top Gun award for the trap shoot with
Bill's son, Jesse winning Junior Top Gun. Other Youth participants in the
trap shoot were Carly, Greg, Mike and Tom. (See pictures below.)
Then came the moment many were waiting for: the raffle of the Remington 870
Shotgun generously donated by Lou Fico of Westchester Friends of the NRA.
Bill and Don are pictured below with Kevin, the winner.

Club Honors Stuart Cohen

The highlight of this year's annual picnic at Sylvan Lake,
NY was the dedication of the newly planted Kwanzan cherry tree to honor the
memory of fallen Westchester County DA's Investigator, Stuart Cohen.
The purchase of the tree was made possible by members Thomas Dieck, Bill
Bock, Jim Gmelin, Carlo Marotta, Bill Gentry, John Peters, Lenny Esposito,
Thom Newman, Chuck Sehulster, Don Hamilton, Don Kane, Phil Beers, Steve
Miller. The Bocks, as usual, were very gracious hosts, and made everyone
feel welcome. The club picnic was a great success with the weather
cooperating.
CAMP DEBRUCE
During the month of June, the Club was able to send two
members' children to NYS Conservation Camp at Camp Debruce in Livingston
Manor, NY. The two boys enjoyed a week of learning about our natural world,
and participated in various outdoor activities including hiking, fishing,
boating and the successful completion of their hunter safety course. The
Club was able to sponsor these children with the assistance of the National
Rifle Association who provided a grant in the amount of $250.00. We thank
them for their generosity.
FATHER'S DAY BASS TOURNEY
By three thirty a.m., club members were out on the waters of
the lakes and reservoirs around the County searching for wide-awake Bass.
Donny was back early to report he had taken no fish. (although
Karen caught a mess of crappies--they lost count at 40!)
Donny manages a smile.
Donny was not the only one to come up empty. But Carlo and
Randy show us there were some fish out there. Carlo and Randy caught
one large mouth and one small mouth bass. Each fish measured 19" and weighed
three-something pounds. Randy allowed that the fish Carlo caught was
perhaps a couple of ounces heavier.

The gang gathers to celebrate with Randy and Carlo and
their catch.

BRAGGIN' RIGHTS
Jason Hinckley shows off the 22", five pound, six ounce
brown trout he caught in the reservoir. Way to go, Jason!
BEDFORD FISHING DERBY

On Sunday May 6, Club members participated in the Annual
Bedford Fishing Derby. They spent time demonstrating and then
helping kids load lures, learn casting techniques, and other finer
points of successful trout fishing. Many of the kids went home
with their catch and everyone had a great day.
TRAP SHOOT
The annual trap shoot at the 110 Rod and Gun Club was a great success with many
members participating. Our thanks to Jim Steck for hosting the
Club. Plan to join us next time!

Clean-up at Muscoot
Many members showed up to help at clean up day at Muscoot. Club
members hauled out 40 bags of trash.

Mission
Statement
The Sportsmen's Club of Northern Westchester was
established to foster sportsmanship, conservation and community involvement and is
dedicated to giving hunters and fishers the opportunity to pursue their
sports responsibly. Further, the Club is involved in fishing and hunting
safety programs for youngsters and, as part of these efforts, sponsors
children for participation in the New York Department of Environmental
Conservation Camps.
Background
Founded November 14, 1944, and incorporated in 1945, the Sportsmen’s Club of
Northern Westchester has always been deeply involved in numerous
conservation efforts, including pheasant and fish stockings, bird feeding,
wood duck house building and placement, stream improvement, reservoir
clean-ups, and hunter safety courses --to name a few.
For many years the club ran a Pan Fish Derby for area youth, and
presently is involved with the Towns of Bedford and Lewisboro in assisting
their Parks and Recreation personnel with their annual youth fishing
derbies.
While members are committed to civic involvement in matters that effect
the environment, it’s not all work. The club conducts an annual trap shoot,
sporting clay shoot, a bass tournament, a bow shoot, club picnic, game
dinner/raffle, Christmas party, salt water fishing trips, and an ice fishing
derby.
Since many of the members are fishermen, there are boats on most of the
major reservoirs in the Westchester/Putnam area available for their use.
Boats are also maintained on the Rondout and Ashokan reservoirs in the
Catskills.
For those who like to hunt, the club has a cabin located in the Catskills
next to the Sundown Wild Forest, which provides over 28,000 acres of woods
and streams for hiking, fishing, snowmobiling, off-roading, bird watching,
camping, small and big game hunting. The cabin is available to members year
round for a nightly fee of $10.00.
The club meets the third Tuesday of every month, (except July and August),
at the Katonah Memorial House. Meetings usually feature a guest speaker or
video of outdoor related topics, and refreshments are served.
The annual dues for membership are $60.00 for adults and $25.00 for
junior members. Membership is open to all. For more information contact John
Peters at jcpeters46@yahoo.com or (914) 248-5077.
